Preston North End boss Paul Heckingbottom insisted that Rovers’ penalty in the second half was the wrong call.

Jack Whatmough was judged by referee Josh Smith to have fouled Dom Hyam in the box as the defender jumped for a header.

PNE also felt they should have had a spot kick of their own in the final stages when Makhtar Gueye challenged Brad Potts.

“We have all seen it, you'd better talk about it. I am not talking about it today, I have just been sent off last week,” said Heckingbottom.

“Josh and Jeremy (Simpson, fourth official) know they have got it wrong, they couldn't wait to get off the pitch.

“All the time Pottsy was down getting treated, they didn't even add any of that on. It is one of them, they have had a howler.

“I can't tell you how frustrating it is. It is our job and we focus on what we do, but I can't tell you how frustrating it is.

“When you are working with the lads all the time, especially the subs when they came on and the impact they had, and they have not got the reward for that.

“But then add to that the 6,500 fans who are paying to be here, they expect better, we all expect better.”

When asked if he felt the Gueye incident was similar to the penalty given at the other end, the manager replied: “It is not similar.

“I have never seen a penalty given for a clash of heads. I see them all the time for elbows in faces, simple.”

Heckingbottom was disappointed with his side’s display in the opening 45 minutes but felt the substitutes had a positive impact.

“We were too easy to play against in the first half, we didn't cause them enough problems,” he explained. “We just played in front of them too much, attacking players not positive enough.

“The message at half-time was if we weren't going to be positive enough in the second half, we would be positive from the bench. We were, but we put ourselves in a horrible position being 2-0 down.

“We always focus on what we do and how we can be better, what we get right and what we get wrong, but it is just frustrating the way the game has ended.”
